How to Tell If Your Cabinets Are Good Candidates for Refinishing
Most Calgary kitchens are better candidates for refinishing than homeowners expect. Here is the honest checklist we use on every walk-through.
Almost every Calgary homeowner who calls us asks the same question first: are my cabinets even worth refinishing? In 35 years of finishing work, the answer has been yes far more often than no. Here is exactly what we look at.
Start With the Boxes, Not the Doors
The cabinet boxes carry the kitchen. If the boxes are square, solidly attached to the wall, and free of water damage, you have a strong candidate — even if the doors look tired. Doors and drawer fronts are the easy part: they come off, get sprayed in a controlled environment, and come back looking factory-new.
Signs the boxes are still good:
- Doors close square and stay closed
- No soft or swollen spots under the sink
- Shelves are flat, not sagging
- Face frames are tight, with no separation at the joints
Material Matters Less Than You Think
Solid maple, oak, birch, MDF, and even factory-laminated thermofoil can all be refinished with the right preparation. Heavily grained oak is the most common concern we hear, and it is also the most satisfying transformation — a grain-filling step gives you a smooth, modern surface with no visible grain telegraphing through the finish.
The one honest exception is water-damaged particleboard. Once the core has swollen, coating it only hides the problem. In that case we replace the affected doors or panels and refinish everything to match.
When Replacement Is Genuinely the Better Call
We will tell you when refinishing is the wrong answer. If your layout does not work, if you need to move plumbing, or if half the boxes are failing, a refinish is money spent on the wrong problem. Refinishing changes colour, sheen, and durability — it does not change floor plans.
If the layout works and the boxes are sound, refinishing typically saves 50–70% versus replacement and takes about a week instead of a month.
